Thirty years of excellence...

During its thirty year history, W.J. Mouat Secondary has grown from a brand new junior high with a population of 150 students and nine teachers, to one of Canada's top high schools boasting over 1400 students with well over 70 teachers.

Built in 1973 and named after the then superintendent W. J. "Bill" Mouat, the school opened to a small group of eager grade eight and nine students. Since then, Mouat's students range from grade nine through twelve and have be recognized provincially and throughout Canada for their Academic, Athletic and Fine Arts achievements.

With an expansion in 1988 that created science labs, art rooms and a theatre, and another expansion in 2002 that created an art wing, a practice gym and state of the art weight room, Mouat's students have the best facilities to enrich their learning, spark their creativity and build their athletic prowess.

Mouat has been proud of their academic achievements throughout the years and has most recently been proud of those students who have scored 100% on more than one of thier provincial exams. Mouat has been one of the top scoring schools as a whole in the provincial exams for a number of years. We have the highest percentage of grade twelve students taking Math 12 in our district and are striving to teach our students more that just the "basics". Mouat is proud of our well-rounded, continually expanding, number of courses that are offered to our students that enable them seek out challenging subjects and accomplish their academic goals.

Mouat has a diverse number of programs and courses that enable students to reach their highest potential. CISCO is a computer technician certification course that is offered to students, and Mouat even offers courses on-line so that busy, self-motivated students can take courses over the internet.

Athletically, Mouat has been making and holding records in athletic achievements since 1975. We have top 10 provincially ranked teams in basketball, football, swimming, track and wrestling, and offer many different sport to suit any willing athletes.

The fine arts department offers a variety courses in Art, Music and Drama. Students can be in the school play, take photography classes and learn to play the guitar all in the same semester if they choose.

Mouat is also proud of its multiculturalism. Over 35 language groups call Mouat home, and we offer an environment where those learning English and those who know English can work together and learn from each other. Having so many language and immigrant groups in the school enables all students to become more socially aware by putting a face to global issues.

The Real W.J. Mouat...

Mr. Bill Mouat was an educator in B.C. for over 40 years. He started teaching in a one room log cabin when he was 18 years old and continued in education until 1974. He was the superintendent of the Abbotsford school district for 1960 until 1974 and when asked why they named a school after him he commented "I guess they ran out of names."

Our school had a special relationship with the man we called "The Real Mr. Mouat". Every year we celebrated his birthday and he regularly attended special events such as the graduation ceremonies. Our namesake passed away in 2004 at age 93. He was always very proud of the accomplishments made in the school that bears his name, and we hope keep Mr. Mouat's name in good standing far into the future.
